ENERGY SELF-RELIANCE

The advent of the energy crisis 1973 spurred an energy self-reliance program that steadily reduced the country’s near total dependence on imported petroleum.  Where before energy imports constitute 92% of the country’s total requirements, as in 1972, the country has become self-sufficient in nearly half of its energy needs in 1984.  This was accomplished productive oil discoveries in the offshore area of Palawan in southwestern Philippines.  Indigenous sources of energy were likewise developed like hydro, geothermal, dendrothermal, coal, biogas and biomass.  Thus the Philippines became the first country in Asia to utilize Geothermal energy and in a short span of 6 years became the number 2, next to United States, in Geothermal energy utilization.
