Literacy program

During the Marcos years when the Philippines was one of the most Literate in Asia.


The Marcos administration widened the Filipino’s access to free education by allocating the biggest portion of the budget for education (58.7 billion pesos in 20 years).  The priority given to education and manpower training resulted in the attainment of the literacy rate continuously improved from 61.0% in 1965 to about 93.0% in 1985.  The rate has risen to almost 100% in Metro Manila during the same year.
