Through the initiative of the First Lady, some 2,000 day care centers were established to assist in the social development of disadvantaged children (ages 3 to 6) in the depressed areas. The goal is to make these children grow and develop in spite of their family’s economic deprivation. To-date, the number of these day care centers now total 6,300 in line with the presidential directive to establish as least one day care center in every barangay. The day care center program is supported by local governments, non-govermental organizations and inter-faith groups.
Four important components of the program include socialization which aims to foster the personality development of the children; inculcation of desirable social values; citizenship training and supplementary feeding to rehabilitate the malnourished.
