The First Lady Imelda R. Marcos has organized the Heart Foundation of the Philippines in response to the need for a philanthropic, civic-oriented institution dedicated to curb the increasing incidence of heart diseases in country. The Disease Intelligence Center of the Department of Health reports that 12,000 Filipinos die of cardiac diseases every year, most of them from low income group. To this end, the Heart Foundation will provide free operation and hospitalization to deserving patients in need of heart specialists and researchers would consolidate their studies for the public good. Mrs. Marcos has organized a consortium of effort from the private and government sectors which has raised an initial P1 Million. Donations will be placed in a trust fund, the earnings of which will be used to support the Heart Foundation’s activities.
