In 1974 the First Lady initiated the Pasig River development project, for centuries the flowing Pasig River has been the principal artery of trade, travel and commerce of Manila and the surrounding provinces. In times goes by, the river had crystal clear water and clean, healthy surroundings that prompted the most discriminating residents to build their villas along its banks. But the march of time and industry has changed the face of the Pasig into a polluted, dirty waterway. To restore it to its pristine beauty, Mrs. Marcos has embarked on a beautification and cleanliness campaign that will make the river one of the principal attractions of Manila and its environs.
