In 1957, shortly after Miguel Lopez de Legazpi had planted the capital of Spain’s Oriental empire in Manila, his grandson Juan De Salcedo set off to explore northern Luzon.  After his first expedition, he returned in 1974 with Augustinian missionaries and took formal possession of the Ilocos, with his capital a t villa Fernandina, now Vigan.
